Henry Robinson Hall was a Victorian and Edwardian artist who was particularly noted for his works on Highland cattle. He painted in both oils and watercolours. He was born in York to Eliza Robinson in 1859 and registered as Henry Robinson. His mother subsequently married John Storey Hall in 1867, and so his surname was changed accordingly. Hall lived for a while in Newcastle upon Tyne where he became involved in the artistic community. He later moved to Fylde in Lancashire and married. He later lived in Barrow in Furness and then Coniston in Cumbria, where he had a studio and also ran an artists’ supplies shop and café. He died in Coniston on 31st May 1927 and is buried in the churchyard of St. Andrews church there.
Hall exhibited his works from 1895-1903 at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Artists and the Royal Scottish Academy.
Today his works are held in the National Collection, the Atkinson Art Gallery, the Oldham Gallery, the Rossendale Museum and the Lakeland Arts Trust. He was a fellow of the North British Academy of Arts.

This original oil on canvas work by Henry Robinson Hall is a classic study of Scottish Highland cattle in the portrait format that is unusual for this subject matter and genre. It features one magnificent creature, who is standing on a grassy pathway looking directly at the viewer, in an almost inquisitive stance. A ray of sunshine breaks through the mist and highlights his thick rich red coat and curved white horns. Behind him we glimpse two other Highland cattle, one black and one white. The cattle are in an open area of verdant pasture dotted with purple heather. In the background we see the imposing slopes of the mountain ranges that form the Highlands. The sky above is misty and atmospheric.
