Available for sale from Big Sky Fine Art; this original oil painting by Edgar Barclay is dated 1909. The painting was created whilst Barclay lived at 2 Wynchcombe Studios, Englands Lane, Haverstock Hill, London. (Today’s postcode would be NW3 4XY).
The work is presented and supplied in a sympathetic contemporary frame, mounted using conservation materials and behind glass.

Edgar Barclay was born in 1824 and enjoyed a distinguished and prolific career as a painter of genre scenes and landscapes. He began his studies in Dresden with Julius Schnorr von Carolsfield until 1861, and then continued his studies in Rome. From the late 1860s he divided his time between London and Italy. In Rome he became friendly with Giovanni Cossa and exhibited with him in 1874 at the Cincio Casino.

He also belonged to the circle of English artists known as The Etruscans who specialized in Italian landscape paintings. He returned to England for good in the 1880s and lived and practiced from Haversack Hill, Hampstead, until his death in 1913. He is most noted for his lyrical treatment of rural subjects in Wessex, particularly Hampshire and Dorset. He also provided illustrations for a number of books.

Edgar Barclay was a member of both the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and the Royal Institute of Oil-Painters. His works were showcased mainly at the New Gallery and the Grosvenor. His works have also been featured in the Manchester City Art Gallery, the Royal Academy and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.

This charming pastoral scene is an example of Barclay at his best. It depicts a young girl with a stick in a vivid green meadow. She is playfully facing a grey donkey and there is a cow drinking from a stream in the background. It is spring time and there is plentiful pink blossom on the trees. It was painted during the reign of Edward VII and is therefore of late Edwardian period.
