Available for sale from Big Sky Fine Art; this original oil painting by Edward Duncan, dating from the nineteenth century.
The painting is presented and supplied in a nineteenth century ornate frame. The painted surfaces and canvas would benefit from some restoration, cleaning and conservation. Within the last 30 years the canvas stretcher has been replaced.
The painting is priced accordingly in recognition of the restoration work that is required if the new owner wishes to improve the fabric of the painting.

Edward Duncan was apprenticed to Robert Havell the engraver and learnt first to be an engraver. He set up his own business and worked mainly on sporting themes and coastal scenes. He is acknowledged to have very good drawing skills, perhaps as a result of this early discipline and indeed all his works show great attention to detail and accuracy. He later became an accomplished artist, chiefly in watercolours, and was a member of the Old Water Colour Society and the New Water Colour Society. He exhibited prolifically, at both Water Colour Societies and also at the British Institute, the Royal Academy, the Victoria and Albert Museum and other major provincial galleries. His coastal scenes, often depicting ship wrecks, are among his best and most important works.

This original oil on canvas depicts a coastal landscape / marine scene near Whitby in North Yorkshire. There is a twin masted wooden sailing ship, without sails, on the rocky shore and a smaller rowing boat aside it. There are figures on the larger vessel and on the beach, apparently unloading it. Further out to sea there are a number of other vessels, including one with red sails and a steam paddle ship. In the background, there are large rugged cliffs, which carry on down the coast. The sun is low in the sky, indistinct but lighting up the evening sky. The palette is warm, with rich browns and yellows giving a mellow feel.
