Available for sale from Big Sky Fine Art; this original oil painting by Joseph Clarke dated 1881.
The painting is presented and supplied in a mid 20th century frame.
Joseph Clarke was born in Dorset, educated at Dorchester and studied at J.M Leigh’s and the Royal Academy Schools. He exhibited at leading London galleries including the Royal Academy from 1857 to 1904 and sent paintings to America too. He received a medal and award for paintings in Philadelphia in 1876 and was a member of the New Water-Colour Society, although equally at home painting in oils. His paintings are meticulous and capture the spirit of Victorian England. A few of his works are of biblical subjects, but most are of a domestic genre with a tender even affectionate nature.
This original oil on canvas painted in 1881 is a delightful domestic scene of huge warmth and tenderness. It is set inside a very modest dwelling; there is an empty brick hearth, a pair of bellows hang on the wall and a minimum of furnishings, including a wooden milking stool. Our focus is on a group of three figures, who are all engaged in gentle play. An older figure, perhaps the mother, leans approvingly over the younger children, both girls. The elder of the girls is kneeling, facing her younger sister. She is wearing a red skirt, and green shawl, with an embroidered cream trim, and a white mop cap or bonnet. Her younger sister is sitting upright on the flagstone floor, carefully holding a toy doll. The younger child is wearing a purple dress with a white apron.
